Common Eye Conditions
Short Sight (Myopia)
This term is used to describe an eye where the focusing system is too strong
for the length of the eye. It may be a normal power but is a longer than average eye or could be an average length of eye with an over powered focusing system – it may even be a bit of a mixture of them both.
Whichever the cause the end result is the same, a distant object comes into focus in front of the retina leaving a blurred image on the retina.
When we want to focus on close objects we normally have to increase the power of the eye but in a short sighted eye this is the natural state and explains why short sighted people have difficulty seeing in the distance but have a good close vision – hence the term short sighted!
