Our Company and a potted history
Who are we?
Wallwork opticians are up to date, old-fashioned opticians.
The up-to-date and old-fashioned elements are as important as each other. Despite a turnover that is a fraction of that enjoyed by the ‘bigger’ names in modern optics, we have a huge investment in equipment and an equipment level that exceeds by far the average found in other opticians.
To back this up we undergo continuing education and training, to ensure that we can either help our patients ourselves and/or recognise when other colleagues or professionals would be better suited.
The old fashioned concept of taking time to listen, assess and explain is just as important. Together these two concepts form what we feel is an ideal to aim for and we try to keep achieving this in a friendly and relaxed manner.
There has been a Wallwork Opticians in the Salford area since the nineteenth century.
In the 1880s Ian Wallwork’s great grandfather, Abel, was a jeweller, based at 434 Regent Rd Salford, who started specialising in pince-nez and other optical items. His son, Douglas, was one of the first specifically trained opticians and together they formed A Wallwork & Son, Opticians. Just before the second war his son, Dennis, trained at Manchester and after serving as an optician in the war and some years at the Manchester Eye Hospital and Regent Rd he took over.
The 1960s saw us move to the then new Salford Precinct where Ian Wallwork joined
after training at Aston University and Birmingham Eye Hospital. In the late 70s we purchased Muldoon Opticians at this site following Mr Muldoon’s retirement and have built it up from its part time state to a busy full time practice.
In 1986 Dennis retired and Ian Wallwork consolidated the two practices on one site.
As well as the family members there has been help from other qualified opticians over the years who have found the ethos of the business to match their aspirations.
At present there are two ophthalmic opticians (optometrists):
Ian Wallwork BSc (HONS) FCOptom. and Audrey Black BSc (HONS) FCOptom. Nicky Benmayor FBDO, Adrian Halsall FBDO (HONS) LVA. and Jane Crackle FBDO are our dispensing opticians.
We aim to provide a very full service for our patients
and to work well with our local hospitals and consultants, whether privately or through the NHS.
We are accredited members of the local Diabetic Screening system and Childcare Vision scheme.
We undertake work for the Driving Vehicle Licencing Agency
and are able to offer in-depth referrals when needed and can offer ongoing monitoring to aid consultants when required.
