Wallworks vision related Trivia
Sporting trivia
In 1998 Manchester United won the European cup
and their star defender Jaap Stam was wearing lenses from Wallwork Opticians. When they previously won it in 1968 their defender Nobby Stiles was wearing contact lenses supplied by Wallwork Opticians. Was that the reason for their success?
Equipment trivia
When we were leaving our first premises on Regent Road in the 1960’s
we found an old advertising flyer that must have come from the early 1900’s. It boasted that at Wallwork Opticians we tested both eyes separately and that we could test you in the evening because we had ELECTRIC LIGHTS! In those days we were at the forefront of technology and tried to offer the best service possible – some things don’t change.
Contact lens trivia
During the war surgeons noticed that spitfire pilots who had their canopies shot
and had splinters of the Perspex in their eye did not suffer an inflammation from rejection. This helped them to realise the material was suitable for making contact lenses – PMMA lenses were born out of adversity!
Refractive Surgery trivia
It is rumoured that early surgery was helped on its way when a shortsighted postman
went head first over the handlebars of his bicycle. He damaged his face badly and when the abrasions he created on his eye healed he found he could see without glasses. These days they take a more scientific approach to create a correct corneal surface.
